Book to celebrate 50 years of the Otago Rally

A new book covering the first 50 years of the Otago Rally is currently in pre-production, with a release date set for the early part of 2026.

The Dunedin-based event has become one of New Zealand’s ‘must-do’ rallies since it was first run in 1976, and has regularly been the opening round of the national rally championship.

Additionally, the world-renowned Otago Classic Rally is regarded as the premier classic rally in the Southern Hemisphere, and has attracted many former World Rally Champions among its esteemed entrants.

The 200-page book is being written by respected motorsport journalists Peter Whitten and David Thomson, and will include coverage from all 50 years of the Otago Rally.

It explores the early years of rallying in the South Island, from the 1973 Heatway Rally that inspired future competitors like Brian Stokes, right through to the 2025 Otago Rally that saw a record number of spectators lining the stages.

A huge catalogue of photos will be used to illustrate the book, with photos provided by some of the sport’s most talented photographers.

The full-colour, glossy production will be available in both hardcover and softcover versions, with a special souvenir Limited Edition also available via pre-order.

The authors are also calling for recollections from former officials, competitors or spectators, who have a special story that could be included in the book.

Submissions of up to 200 words will be considered and should be sent to recollections@otagorally.com by no later than September 30, 2025.

Pre-orders for the Otago Rally 50th Anniversary book will be open soon, with the book expected to be available for delivery in March 2026.
